The electrocardiogram (ECG) is the most important parameter in cardiovascular diagnostics. Typical indications, such as a heart attack, atrial or ventricular fibrillation, cardiac arrhythmia, infections, thickening of the myocard, and much more can be diagnosed based on the ECG waveform. Various examination methods are used here.

While the resting ECG can provide results within a few seconds, and is therefore used in emergency medicine, a long-term ECG device (Holter) must typically be worn by the patient over 24 hours. This offers the advantage that irregular or rarely occurring arrhythmia can be detected. In addition, the stress limit of the heart can be determined based on an exercise ECG.
